Holla, steampunx! I finally managed to get into this bad boy after lots of trouble with the whole registration process. Someone from this board approached me on my etsy site, a ways back, and said I should post some pix of my jewelry. So here I am, slapped pink from registering and raring to go. So right off the bat, I should tell y'all...I don't think I'm a steampunk, per say... But I've always always always used gears in my art..from huge industrial sized ones right down to the teensiest watch gears. I love their symmetry, symbolism, and great utilitarianism and am so happy that the whole steampunk scene has made it such a popular aesthetic. Okay, that said, Ima gonna attempt to post some pix. Hope y'all like my shizzle ;) Any feedback, good or bad, is much appreciated. Steampunk and Vaudeville are two very distinctive genres with attributes that are easily recognized, but most people wouldn't automatically connect the two. Steampunk centers around the time period of Queen Victoria's reign in England and the "Wild West" time frame in the United States, action, science fiction, steam power, and future technologies seen through Victorian eyes. Vaudeville on the other hand, spans from about 1880 to 1930, is all about traveling side shows, magicians, cabaret singers, minstrels, one act plays, and the circus. However, I believe that it is their differences that make them family.

Steampunk conjures images of airships and clockwork gadgets, mad scientists and anachronistic inventions. Men in three piece suits with lasers in their canes, and ladies in petticoats with ray-guns in their garters. Vaudeville brings you into a world of trained animals and tightrope walkers, burlesque dancers and minstrel shows. Women reciting Shakespeare while dressed as men, and men performing feats that defy the senses.

Loving the Steampunk touches in recent weddings. The little flare is subtle yet absolutely beautiful. Listening to Hell on Heels, perfect fit.

In another incarnation, I’m a wedding blogger, and I’ll tell you right now that there has never been a steampunk wedding on Style Me Pretty. Not yet anyways. Yes, we have our own aesthetic, and here are five ways to incorporate it a little, or a lot, into your wedding plans.

 Steampunk Invitations

Royal Steamline is my favorite source for vintage/Victoriana Save the Date cards and invitation sets. You can shop by style, either Vintage, Steampunk, Retro, or Gothic to get just he look you’re going for. Personally, I love this old timey postcard of Picadilly Circus in London.

Jenna Hewitt is an author, and the leading designer for SparkleyJem. She creates Steampunk costumes and jewelry.

Q. What are some of your favorite items that you've created?

A.The absinthe fairy costume, the Steampunk in Wonderland mini top hat, the the Brittania union flag pin, and the Royal Genius necklace.

The absinthe fairy gown is a complete costume created as a showpiece for the victorian steampunk society convention in Lincoln UK. It is currently on show at Bradford Industrial museum till May. It includes all the underwear required to give a true victorian ball gown silhoutte, including hourglass corset and crinoline, with layers of net, lace and silk building into a huge skirt and elegantly shaped apple green bodice.

I started by creating the underwear for the gown, then cut the bodice to fit over the corset, the skirt was made to go over the crinoline cage in layers. For a comprehensive step by step of how this and other complex outfits were created you can read all about it on my blog sparklyjem.blogspot.com.

Hand-painted Neck Lace Jabot Choker of Brass and Blue with Steampunk LocketHello, Steampunk Community!  My name is Corey, and I'm brand new here...  I was pointed here by someone who found me on my Etsy shop.  I think she was doing what a lot of us like to do:  scope out cool Steampunk clothes and accessories!  I was asked to introduce myself and my work, but as I started to explore this site and thought about it a bit more I realized I could touch on some topics for Steampunk Community that would make my blog post a bit more than a simple "look at my stuff" sort of thing...

Now, personally I'm relatively new to the Steampunk phenomenon.  I've only been to one convention--the Gaslight Gathering here in San Diego.  I've tooled around the internet exploring a lot of the various Steampunk-oriented sites, and found a lot of visual eye candy that I just drool over.  The art, the DIY projects, the props, the costumes, the videos--it all looks like so much fun it's hard not to fall in love with the style!

The more I read about Steampunk, the more I realize that there are lots of different "shades" of it depending on where your interest lies.  Some love it for the social aspects, some love it for the creativity, some love it for the philosophies reflected in it.  The great thing about it is that it can so easily embrace everyone's bent.  Personally, I love it for the attire.

I may be biased.  I have an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Costume Design (not a unique background in the Steampunk community, I have learned--there are a LOT of theatre folk interested in it!).  I design and sew for a living, so I pay attention to the costumes that are worn.  Much like theatre, there are lots of degrees of realism in Steampunk costuming, varying from the utterly fantastical to vintage recreation.  Part of the fun is how one decides to "tweak" their clothing for their own needs or how closely one hews to historical accuracy.  There are pros and cons to each side of that debate, but certainly beautiful results regardless of one's preferences.  And one can have a fabulous Steampunk ensemble with relatively little investment, or take pride in special purchases, or even seek out actual authentic vintage pieces.  The range is limitless.
